The USSONAR Ultrasound-Guided Synovial Biopsy (USGBy) Training Program Track takes place May 19 and is intended for rheumatologists. The purpose of the course is to provide familiarization with and basic instruction in the procedures necessary to obtain synovial tissue for both research and clinical purposes. Registration for the UGSBy course (May 19) can be bundled with any of the tracks occurring May 17-18 for those who meet the experience requirements for the course. This track will be held at the University of South Florida Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), located at 124 S Franklin St, Tampa, Florida. Transportation will be provided from the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay hotel to the lab. Transportation after the lab is over will be the responsibility of the attendee. 

The ultrasound guided synovial biopsy track is for experienced MSK sonographers wanting to learn this technique for research and clinical purposes.  Applicants will be accepted based on screening criteria.


Course objectives: 

  1. Review the history of Ultrasound Guided Synovial Biopsy

  2. Demonstrate Ultrasound-Guided Synovial Biopsy procedure

  3. Practice Ultrasound-Guided Synovial Biopsy on cadaveric human specimens under the guidance of experienced practitioners.

  4. Review current knowledge on synovial histology and its application to clinical practice

Course Description:
The course will include both didactic lectures and hands-on learning in the cadaver laboratory. 

Didactic sessions will be used to teach the following topics: (1) History of Synovial Biopsy, (2) Indications for Synovial Biopsy, (3) Logistics and Set up of Synovial Biopsy, (4) Standard Operating Protocol for synovial biopsy and (5) Interpretation of Synovial Biopsy samples. The hands-on learning session will allow students a hands-on experience in the cadaver lab. Learners will be able to practice the procedure in the laboratory on cadaver upper limbs and cadaver lower limbs. The instructor-to-learner ratio in the laboratory will be 1:4.

  • 7.5 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program; and
  • 7.5 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.

It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM or ABP MOC credit. Learner data will be shared with ACCME and the applicable certifying boards.
